I don't have the answer to the previous question, but for more moto trivia what I want to know is who Pete from Rochester/District 4 is mentioned down a ways in the following post:http://www.vitalmx.com/forums/Motodrive,19/73-Elsinore-test,16386
I think I know, but it was before my time so I need one of the old guys to educate me!
On a side note, I rode with Frank in the AZ desert this past January and he still hauls the mail, even when just cruising around the trails! |

On the number 35: GP numbers used to be issued per event.
The go fast kid from Roch. would have been Pete McGill. He was at that event. Who's older brother Tom was a stellar dirt track/scrambles kind of guy. Unfortunately Pete passed away two years ago, but not before he had restored a Husky CR250 and demonstrated that he was still very quick in the saddle. Well worthy of the accolades and national attention that were coming to him before he lost his way.
Pete and MR essentially grew up together under the shadows of successfull siblings at racetracks all over the northeast.
Someone in that blog mentioned the Wilsons. They were just fun to watch. They could make a Maico do things your mother wouldn't approve.

Thanks Scott, I thought they were talking about Pete McGill. I don't think I ever met him. I know MR though! Was always fun wondering who was walking in the shop door to visit when I was there. "Two shock stories" and your morning coffee to start the day...
Back to mxracer's #35 question, isn't this picture from the Southwick national when Frank got 3rd? Wouldn't be a GP number then, right? |

Hmmm, is it Southwick? Thinking out loud: numberplate backgrounds are dark. (a) 250 GP green or (b) 125 national black. Don't appear to be 500 yellow or 250 national white. Rear plates towards the back so it's post '78. Hmmm......
Still got my Hi-Points, fitted up with the Maely shoe. The Super Seer's always passed to much dust for me. But I'm a wuss when it comes to dust.
Ask BA about his '79 MC5 experience! |

The #35 in this photo is Nick Hapta. He is a great rider I would have never known about, had it not been for mxdad703. Nicely done Sir. He is not the rider in the previous photo, but is from NY and warrants mentioning in this thread. I will learn more about this #35 soon. |

I can probably get you to our TSPTF (Top Secret Practice Track Facility) on Saturday. I am thinking it will be better than Budd's Creek.

I listed all the Loretta Lynn Champions from NY thru 2008 in a previous post. I feel it only fitting to mention Brian Austin also. In 2003, Brian was in a tie breaker situation for the overall and finished 2nd. I have many memories of both Brian and Paul Austin. They sure could put on a show!! I always liked how Brian operated. If you ever needed help with anything, Brian was the man to see. Also if he wanted something, he worked his ....... to make it happen. He earned national number 70 as well as the #1 plate locally. Thanks to the Austins for all the memories.
I was at Palmyra some years ago and this guy backed his bike up to the starting gate. I mean he was in the start gate rear wheel first. This was in one of the expert motos and I wasn't sure what the guy was doing. He was there for awhile and then the gate dropped. The rider: Paul Austin. Winner of that moto: You guessed it!!

That reminds me back around the same time when there was no Senior B class, only Vet. I was racing at Palmyra there were about 8 riders or so signed up in Vet, with two of them being Bart Lucas and Marty Merz. I was relentless in harassing them, saying that they were sandbaggers, cherrypickers, blah, blah, blah, you name it. I eventually got them to start backwards. The gate dropped, and I got the holeshot! Wooohoooo! And then going through Walker's Ass on the first lap both Marty and Bart passed me, at the same time, one on each side. Sigh. It made my dream of being a professional motocrosser a bit smaller.
Talking after the moto with Marty, he said that he and Bart almost took each other out on the start when they spun their bikes around.
OK, back to the main subject. Carry on.

Back to the picture of Frank Stacy on page 6 of this post - I asked him about the dark number plate backgrounds and he said if he remembers correctly the AMA used black backgrounds for 125 nationals, green for the 250 and white for the 500 class which was he thought was the same as FIM GP's back in the day. 35 was his national number that year (1979).
Does anyone know the three digit numbers Frank raced with?
Ben, would you be willing to give anyone who gets it right a free 2010 membership to wnymotocross.com? |
