At what age would you let your son/daughter move to expert?

The WNYMA rule book doesn't have any age restrictions on moving from am to expert. Our son who is 14 has all the required points and wins to go to expert, but I think it should be like AMA rules and not allow any forcing to expert until 16 years of age.

I think that is the case. They won't force a 14 yr old to Expert. I believe he can stay AM until 16. Call one of the Board Members....or maybe Alex will reply on here.

The WNYMA Board of Directors is glad to discuss any special cases. If the rider and/ or his parents aren't comfortable with him running with the Experts at age 14, simply write a letter to, or email any board member. We will gladly discuss the topic and make a decision at the next board meeting.

So does this mean that we should take 3 weeks off for you to discuss this matter? It was our fault that we didn't keep a good track of the points and wins. Please give me a phone number or E-mail address and I would gladly speak to whoever I need to.

Why did he move up to AM so young? He must of felt comfortable then. You must to have known the rules for points, and wins to advance. If he has the points and wins he must be a decent rider, right. Why do you want him to stay AM? If he stays AM he will be labeled a sandbagger. The rider should know if he is ready. Dont try to hold him back because of his age, you might be holding back the next big thing.

He is a big kid for his age. I don't know what class you ride in but the expert class is different. Why does the AMA have the age set at 16 then? There must be a reason, maybe it's because their not mature enough or something to race it. I don't know any 14 year old sand baggers in the AM class most of them are on minis.

Why do you say the expert class is different? The top 3 AMs could easily be top 5 in the expert class. I think you should have read the rules, before you let him get the wins, and the points.

Maybe he could stay in AM for the rest of the season, but start out 2011 as an expert. He would have way to many points, and wins to go into 2011 as an AM.

Brian,

Just send me an email and I'll forward it to the rest of the board. We can make a decision before the next scheduled board meeting, if necessary.

Thanks,

Eric

Thanks Eric, I screwed up on my count, I double counted the series the way they are displayed. My bad.

It depends on the maturity level of the rider, how much money his parents have, and what they are trying to achieve.Going fast costs a lot more than going slow. Don't let any boards decide, make your own decision. The rule has always been if under 16,you can't be bumped to expert.A few years ago the WNYMA board made a decision to let Brandon Maires go expert before he was 16,he had to request it,so that proves the rule.He was fast and handled the class very well.He was a very good rider, and did very well. Local expert is not a big thing.Novice riders this week at Loretta's would spank the local x class.A friend that isn't here anymore always said,"just get faster". Do what you feel is right in your situation.
